International Mother Language Day!

At illuminance Solutions we have a very diverse workforce with 19 nationalities, and we are a multilingual workforce.

We have always been a very diverse team. We have age diversity and people with disabilities in addition to many different ethnicities and nationalities. As we have grown over the last few years, new talent has been recruited along the way. We have to be honest and admit that we have never been about filling quotas or looking to employ to tick boxes! At illuminance we have a value based recruitment process where skill sets in addition to values are in focus for in the person looking to be hired.

To celebrate International Mother Language Day, we threw a Language Party!

International Mother Language Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. Languages, with their complex implications for identity, communication, social integration, education and development, are of strategic importance for people.

The theme of International Mother Langue Day 2020 is “Language without borders.” At least 43% of the estimated 6000 languages spoken in the world are endangered. Only a few hundred languages have genuinely been given a place in education systems and the public domain, and less than a hundred are used in the digital world. This is a strength in one way, as we are all able to communicate with each other.

However, due to the globalisation processes, languages are increasingly under threat of being forgotten, or disappearing altogether. Language is a huge part of culture and national identity. When languages fade, so does the world’s rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Opportunities, traditions, memory, unique modes of thinking and expression — all extremely valuable resources for ensuring a better future — are also lost.

Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. Did you know that every two weeks a language disappears taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage??
